When athletes fail, coaches should guide them to attribute the outcome to unstable, controllable causes (e.g., “You didn’t execute the strategy correctly today, but we can fix that in practice”). This prevents athletes from defaulting to global, stable attributions of low ability. Furthermore, fostering intrinsic motivation can be achieved by providing athletes with choice and autonomy in training (supporting self-determination), designing practices that are varied and engaging (stimulating challenge), and offering positive, informational feedback that reinforces competence rather than controlling behavior.
