Pharmacological Criteria: The presence of Tolerance (a need for markedly increased amounts to achieve intoxication or desired effect, or diminished effect with continued use of the same amount) and Withdrawal (the characteristic withdrawal syndrome for the specific substance, or using the substance to relieve or avoid withdrawal symptoms).

The severity of the disorder is determined by the total number of criteria met: two to three symptoms indicate a Mild SUD, four to five symptoms indicate Moderate SUD, and six or more symptoms indicate a Severe Substance Use Disorder. This dimensional approach allows for greater precision in clinical assessment and facilitates the planning of appropriate treatment intensity, ensuring that interventions are matched to the individual’s level of impairment and risk.

Classification of Commonly Abused Substances

Treatment Modalities and Recovery

Substance Use Disorders are highly treatable chronic conditions, though the high rates of relapse underscore the need for long-term, sustained management. Effective treatment must be individualized, comprehensive, and often requires addressing co-occurring mental health disorders simultaneously through integrated treatment models, recognizing that treating one condition without the other significantly lowers the chances of sustained recovery. Treatment typically begins with stabilization and detoxification, followed by sustained pharmacological and behavioral interventions.
